Njål er en av Frelsesarmeens mer kjente størrelser, han har vært informasjonssjef og er en erfaren foredragsholder, men viktigst av alt han har mange års erfaring som leder for Frelsesarmeens arbeid blant rusavhengige på Grønland i Oslo - et arbeid han fikk Kongens fortjenestemedalje i gull for sammen med sin kone Erna.
